Have you ever scrolled through social media and wondered why everyone else seems so perfectly happy — while you feel like you’re falling short? You’re not alone. In today’s world, there is enormous pressure on us to be ‘happy’. Social media, mass media, and the influence of others can make us feel that we are not living up to expectations of what a ‘happy’ life should look like. This pressure can be overwhelming and lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and depression — all fueled by unrealistic role models that have been instilled into mass culture through Hollywood movies, novels, and advertising.

But what is the real secret to lasting happiness? It lies in understanding the connection between meaning, purpose, and the life your soul came here to live — and that is exactly what we explore in this article.

What Are Life Meaning, Soul Purpose, and Personal Happiness?

To truly understand the link between life meaning, soul purpose, and personal happiness, we must first define these concepts.

Seeking Our Soul Purpose can be a complex — and deeply rewarding — task

Seeking for our Soul Purpose can be a complex task

Life Meaning refers to the significance and value we ascribe to our lives and experiences. It is the belief that our actions and existence have a purpose beyond mere survival.

Soul Purpose, on the other hand, is the reason behind our actions and the driving force that gives our lives direction. It is the motivation that propels us forward and provides a sense of fulfillment. By identifying and aligning our actions with our purpose, we can create a life that is meaningful and fulfilling.

Personal happiness, then, is the overall sense of well-being and contentment that arises when we live a life aligned with meaning and purpose.

The paradox of pursuing Happiness

Happiness is an emotion that we all experience, but it is not a constant state of being. It is a fleeting feeling that comes and goes, often influenced by external factors. We may feel happy when we accomplish a goal, spend time with loved ones, or enjoy a favorite hobby. However, happiness is not always within our control. It is not something we can force or achieve through material possessions or external circumstances.

The paradox of pursuing happiness is that the more we focus solely on being happy, the less likely we are to find itHappiness is NOT a destination; it is a byproduct of living a meaningful life! By focusing on finding meaning and purpose, happiness will come naturally.

The sources of happiness are basically two:

  • Body sensations: In this case anything that gives our body some intense pleasure is considered happiness — things like winning the lottery, enjoying a massage, having a night out with friends, listening to uplifting music, watching a great show, and so on.

  • The inner feeling of fulfillment and meaning. It is an overall sense of well-being and contentment that arises when we live a life aligned with meaning and purpose by serving a higher aim than just our personal gain. Think about what Columbus must have felt when he set foot on the unexplored shores he had sailed so far to find! His voyage was the living expression of his Soul’s Calling. Or imagine what a painter feels when his paintings are praised by the most respected art critics and the public eagerly seeks to own them. Both served a purpose far greater than personal gain.

The relationship between life meaning, soul purpose, and personal happiness

When we have a clear Purpose, it gives us a sense of direction and a reason to wake up each morning with genuine motivation. One’s Purpose is given by their soul’s agenda for this lifetime — and finding it is the clearest sign we are walking our Optimal Path in Life. Without it, we feel lost and adrift; with it, we feel deeply alive.

We, as souls, have come to this physical realm to undergo life experiences, learn from them, and grow in awareness. Yes, moments of joy will come — and be grateful for them. But it is living aligned with our soul’s purpose that produces the lasting kind of happiness: not a fleeting spark, but a stable sense of fulfillment arising from living by our values, passions, and ultimately our soul’s plan.

How to discover your own Life Meaning and Soul Purpose

So how do we actually uncover our soul’s purpose? The good news is that the answer is already within you — it just needs to be drawn out through honest self-reflection. It starts with Self-reflection and Introspection, understanding our passions, values, and what truly brings us joy. Reflect on your past experiences and identify moments when you felt most alive and fulfilled.

This sense of purpose gives us Resilience, helping us navigate life's inevitable ups and downs with far greater ease. It also deepens our sense of identity and self-worth — because when you know who you are at a soul level, external circumstances lose much of their power over your confidence. The assistance of a skilled life coach or spiritual coach to achieve resilience can be invaluable.

Moreover, living a meaningful life allows us to cultivate a sense of Gratitude and Appreciation for the Present Moment, leading to greater happiness and contentment.

To discover your purpose in life start a list and ask yourself honestly:

  • What activities or pursuits brought you the greatest sense of satisfaction? – For instance “talking in public”, “doing delicate things alone”, “drawing”, “socializing and making people feel good”, “problem-solving” etc.

  • What activities do you hate most? – For instance “working in a cubicle”, “talking in public”, “noisy places like bars”, “open spaces”...

  • What values do you hold dear, and how can you align your actions with these values? – For instance, “honesty”, “fortitude”, “laid back people”, “street smart”, “courageous”, “emotion sensitive”, “resourceful”, “nurturing”, and so on.

Make a list of the above, write them down, and give each a score from 1 to 10. Then ask a few people who know you well — close friends or family members — to review and confirm your self-assessment. By the time you are around 20 to 25 years old or beyond, your true purpose in life, your soul’s calling, should begin to take shape clearly from this exercise.

Be sure to separate the things that give your body pleasure — like going out with friends, attending sports events, enjoying a coffee catch-up — from the activities that fulfill your deeper inner calling. The latter tend to be more particular to you and carry a different, quieter quality of satisfaction.

The result of your research is not a job or an occupation, but your Life's Mission, your Soul's Calling, such as 'connecting people', 'making people aware of their inner power', 'exploring the ocean', 'relieving people's burdens'.

There will be a range of jobs and occupations that fit each of these. For example, Columbus’ soul calling aimed to provide humanity with new territories for exploration and expansion. Michelangelo's mission was to elevate humans' aesthetic sensibilities and inspire them to reach higher levels of creativity.

Engage in activities that bring you joy and a sense of purpose. Keep exploring and experimenting until you find what truly resonates. The journey of self-discovery is ongoing — and wonderfully, our meaning and purpose can deepen and evolve as we grow. Don’t be discouraged if clarity doesn’t come overnight; for most people, the soul’s calling crystallizes gradually, through lived experience and reflection.

Gratitude, Mindfulness, and Aligning Your Life with Your Soul Path

Gratitude and Mindfulness play a crucial role in cultivating personal happiness.

When we practice Gratitude, we shift our focus from what is lacking to what we already have! It allows us to appreciate the Present Moment and find joy in the simple things in life.

Mindfulness, on the other hand, helps us cultivate awareness and be fully present in the Here and Now. It allows us to let go of worries about the past or future and focus on what is actually in front of us. Together, gratitude and mindfulness keep us anchored in the present while our purpose pulls us forward. They are what transform the spiritual journey from an abstract concept into a daily, lived experience. But inner awareness alone is not enough — we also need intentional, purposeful action to bring it to life.

Once you have discovered your life meaning and soul’s purpose, it's essential to align your life with them! This involves setting goals and taking intentional actions that align with your purpose:

  • Break down your goals into manageable steps and create a roadmap for achieving them.

  • Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who support and inspire you.

  • Seek opportunities that allow you to contribute to something greater than yourself.

  • Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and learning.

By aligning your life with your meaning and purpose, you will experience a greater sense of fulfillment and personal happiness.

Embracing the journey towards soul purpose, life meaning, and personal happiness

In conclusion, happiness is a valuable emotion that we all want to experience, but it should not be the sole focus of our existence. By finding meaning and purpose coming from our souls in our lives, cultivating emotional resilience, and understanding the paradox of pursuing happiness, we can lead deeply fulfilling lives that go far beyond fleeting pleasures. True happiness is not something you chase — it is something you grow into, as you align ever more closely with your soul’s reason for being here.

Our work and career are often one of the most powerful vehicles for expressing soul purpose. When our occupation aligns with our values and inner calling, it becomes more than a source of income — it becomes a form of service, self-expression, and contribution to something larger than ourselves.

If your current career does not align with your purpose, don’t be discouraged — there is always a way to infuse more meaning into what you do, or to gradually move toward work that truly reflects who you are. Remember to embrace your spiritual journey in this life, have fun along the way, and learn to love life! And if you feel ready to explore your soul’s calling with personalized guidance, I warmly invite you to book a Spiritual Reading — a powerful first step toward uncovering your true soul purpose and optimal life path.
