Spiritual Gifts: How to Recognize and Develop Your Siddhis

Every soul arrives in this life with capacities the mainstream world does not teach you how to use. Some of these capacities are common and relatively easy to develop with practice. Others are rare and require years of inner work, or a particular spiritual elevation, before they can function at all. All of them, taken together, are what spiritual traditions have long called spiritual gifts or, in Sanskrit, siddhis.

I want to be clear from the start about two things. First, I am not using the old religious definitions you find in the Christian Bible or elsewhere. I am describing the gifts I have seen emerge in myself and in students over more than twenty-five years of practice, which are closer to the siddhis described in the yogic and hermetic traditions.

Second, these gifts are not the same as talents. Talents are natural aptitudes for specific physical or mental tasks. Gifts are capacities of the soul, expressing through the body when the soul's frequency is high enough to carry them.

The article below sets out which gifts are common, which are genuinely advanced, which are often confused with each other, and how to work with whatever you find in yourself. A broader introduction to the spiritual concepts that shape how I think about this material is available on the concepts page.

What Spiritual Gifts Actually Are

A spiritual gift is a capacity that connects the personality to a wider field of awareness than the five physical senses can reach. The word gift is accurate because, no matter how much you learn or practise, you cannot fully develop these abilities through effort alone. They require a certain level of soul vibration to activate, and that vibration comes from God/ Source. The practice gets you ready. The gift opens when the readiness is real.

Everyone carries the potential for common gifts. Not everyone activates them in this lifetime, and not everyone is meant to. Advanced gifts are much rarer, because the spiritual conditions required to hold them are rarer. The gifts you are given correspond to what your soul planned for this life and what your life purpose actually requires. If a particular gift is not opening for you despite years of effort, the explanation is usually that it was not part of the plan, and chasing it is a distraction from what is.

The gifts also come with responsibility. They are not personal property, however much the ego wants to claim them. They are lent by the Source for a purpose, and misuse or ego-identification with them tends to produce difficulties that can take a long time to unwind.

The Common Gifts Most People Can Develop

These are the gifts accessible to most sincere practitioners with consistent work. They are not trivial, but they are available.

  • Intuition. The capacity to know something directly, without reasoning your way to it. People call it a gut feeling or a sixth sense. Functionally, it is the soul signalling to the mind, using whatever channel is available. The more the mind-soul connection is strengthened through practice, the clearer the signal becomes. Strong intuition usually correlates with active throat, third eye, and crown chakras.

  • Empathy. The capacity to feel what another person is feeling from the inside. This is not sympathy or imagination, it is direct energetic resonance. People with open sensitivity pick up the emotional and energetic field of those around them through what I call the antenna resonance effect. Untrained empathy can be exhausting, because the empath absorbs what they sense. Trained empathy reads without absorbing.

  • Clairvoyance, clairaudience, and clairsentience. Clear seeing, clear hearing, and clear feeling of information from outside the physical range. These show up as visions, inner voices, dreams, premonitions, or direct sensations of presences and energies. They are the standard tools used in Akashic Records work and in most forms of spiritual reading.

  • Basic body energy reading. Human beings have six energy layers surrounding the physical body. The first reading skill is the ability to sense the two layers closest to the physical, the emotional body and the mental body. This lets a trained reader detect distortions before they manifest as physical illness, and identify the energetic roots of conditions that have already manifested. This capacity is foundational to any serious energy-based healing work.

  • Basic energy healing. The ability to channel energy to support physical, emotional, and spiritual healing in another person. Reiki, qigong, and hands-on healing traditions work at this level. Many people develop basic healing capacity with a few years of dedicated practice, and it can be a meaningful form of service even at a beginner's stage.

The Advanced Gifts

The gifts in this category require not just practice, but a particular level of spiritual development. Most people working consistently can reach the common gifts. The advanced ones open to a much smaller number, and usually only after years or decades of sustained inner work.

  • Seer capacity. The ability to perceive future events through tools like mirrors, water, crystal balls, or direct vision, sometimes with the assistance of higher guides. The complication, often missed, is that future sight only holds accurate as long as the decisions leading to that future remain unchanged. Any genuine seer encounters this limit eventually. It is not a failure of the gift. It is a reflection of the fact that free will operates continuously, and the future reshapes itself when the conditions shift.

  • Healing limiting beliefs. The ability to identify the specific limiting beliefs someone carries in their subconscious and to guide their release. This work activates when the healer's own soul vibration is high enough to read the client's energetic field accurately. It requires extensive practice beyond the initial activation, because the beliefs themselves live at energetic layers the conscious mind cannot directly access.

  • Soul and body awareness reading. The ability to read the vibrational level of a person's soul and body accurately, and by extension the awareness level of an animal, plant, or object. This reading reveals the true spiritual state of what is being read, independent of what the subject believes about themselves. It is indispensable for serious spiritual guidance, because most people's self-assessment is inaccurate by a significant margin in one direction or the other.

  • Advanced body energy reading. An extension of basic energy reading into the upper four energy layers, from the fourth to the seventh. This level of reading requires the reader to be enlightened or very close to it, in addition to having the specific skill. It is rare enough that only a handful of people on Earth can do it reliably at any given time.

There are other advanced gifts beyond these, but the article would become a book if I covered all of them. The four above are the ones most relevant to anyone serious about spiritual work, because they are the ones with the most practical application for personal growth and for helping others.

The Energy Skills Often Mistaken for Spiritual Gifts

Two capacities deserve a separate category because they are not strictly spiritual gifts, even though they are often labelled that way. They are advanced energy work, which is different.

  • Levitation. The ability to float above the ground by working consciously with Earth's energies and the root chakra. It requires a strong connection to the Earth element, an open and developed root chakra, and considerable training. You do not need to be spiritually advanced to learn it. You need to be energetically skilled, which is not the same thing.

  • Teleportation. Dissolving the body in one location and reforming it in another. This is a feat of energy mastery, not of spiritual attainment. As with levitation, the practitioner does not need to be spiritually highly developed, but they do need years of precise training in the manipulation of subtle energies.

The distinction matters because people sometimes pursue dramatic capacities like these hoping they will confer spiritual authority, and they do not. Advanced energy skills can be present in someone whose soul vibration is fairly ordinary, and the same person may lack the gifts that actually serve spiritual growth. Keep the categories clean.

How to Recognize and Develop Your Gifts

Recognising your own gifts is less mysterious than it sounds. The gifts usually announce themselves through what comes easily, what draws you, and what you have been doing unconsciously for years before you noticed. A few practical directions.

Pay attention to what has always felt natural. If you have always known things before they happened, felt what other people were feeling without being told, or sensed energy in rooms and objects, one of the common gifts is already active in you. The point is not to acquire it. The point is to refine what is already running.

Notice where others tell you the same thing repeatedly. Friends, family, and clients often see what you cannot see about yourself. If multiple people have told you they find your presence calming, or that you say things that turn out to be accurate, or that you seem to know what is wrong with them before they explain, take the feedback seriously.

Reflect on moments that changed you. The experiences that marked you deeply often did so because a gift was active in that moment. Look at what you were doing, what you were feeling, and what information was flowing through you. The pattern is usually there once you look for it.

Once a gift is identified, development happens through three channels that work together.

  • Daily practice. The gift strengthens through regular use. Meditation, journaling, and specific exercises for the particular gift are the most common forms. Fifteen to thirty minutes a day, done consistently, outpaces longer but occasional sessions by a wide margin.

  • Serious teaching. A qualified mentor who has the same gift or one closely related can save you years. They see where you are blocked, where you are self-deceiving, and where a small adjustment produces a large opening. Most people underestimate how much faster the path moves with real instruction.

  • Community with honest standards. Working alongside other sincere practitioners provides reality checks that solo practice cannot. The caveat is that the community itself must have ethical grounding. Spiritual groups with low ethical standards will train your gift in directions you do not want.

The Obstacles That Block the Gifts

The obstacles to spiritual gifts are the same ones that block every serious inner work, with one addition specific to this topic.

  • Fear. Fear of what the gift will ask of you, fear of being wrong, fear of what you will see if your perception sharpens. Fear usually presents itself as caution, which is why it persists longer than it should.

  • Self-doubt. Particularly the doubt that tells you your perceptions are not real, that what you sensed was just imagination, that you cannot trust yourself. This doubt is a limiting belief. It is not an honest assessment of evidence.

  • Lack of support. If the people around you mock or dismiss your gifts, developing them becomes harder. Find a serious community. The people who knew you before may not be the people who can walk with you from here.

  • Ego attachment to the gift. This is the one specific to spiritual gifts. Your gifts are not your property. They are lent by the Source to be used for your growth and to help others. When the ego identifies with the gift, treats it as personal achievement, or uses it for status, the gift distorts. In some cases, it is withdrawn. The seekers who collapse most painfully on the path are usually the ones who turned a genuine gift into an ego identity and then could not understand why everything stopped working.

The defence against ego attachment is simple to describe and demanding to practise. Stay grateful. Keep the gift in service. Remember that the capacity flowing through you is not yours in any ultimate sense. When you forget this, difficulties arrive to remind you. When you remember it, the gift grows.

When Outside Guidance Accelerates the Work

Much of the work of recognising and developing your gifts is internal. Some of it, though, moves significantly faster with outside help. This is especially true at two points: the beginning, when you are not yet sure what gifts you actually have, and later, when you hit a wall that your own practice cannot move past.

A spiritual reading gives you concrete measurements of where your soul and body vibration actually sit, along with the three main energy issues currently affecting your progress. This information saves you from chasing gifts that are not meant for this life, and from underestimating the ones that are.

If recurring patterns are blocking the gifts you do have, a focused session on releasing limiting beliefs addresses the subconscious structures that prevent activation. And for those ready to move beyond individual sessions into a structured path that develops spiritual perception systematically, Level 1 of the Body & Soul Ascension Spiritual Academy is where the serious work begins. It is built for people who want real training in how consciousness operates, not general encouragement about trusting the universe.

Whatever path you take, the underlying principle holds. Your gifts are real, they are meant to be used, and they grow when you treat them with the respect they deserve. This is one of the slower and more reliable forms of soul growth. Your gifts were given for a reason. The reason is rarely what the personality thinks it is, and it is always worth finding out.
