People have been searching for spiritual enlightenment in countless ways. Some come to it through meditation, others through quiet self-reflection, ancient texts, rigorous practice, or sometimes a single shattering experience that changes everything. The word itself carries a quiet promise: that something inside us can shift so deeply we will never see ourselves or the world the same way again.
After more than 25 years of personal practice and working with clients in over 40 countries, I want to offer you a grounded view of what enlightenment actually is. Not the marketing version. Not the romanticized version. The version that holds up when you examine it carefully and test it against your own experience.
In this article I’ll share the technical definition I work with, the two soul aspects every truly enlightened being has integrated, and why different practitioners give such different answers when you ask them what enlightenment really means.

Where the Word Comes From for Spiritual Enlightenment
In a religious context, enlightenment translates several Buddhist concepts, most notably bodhi and the Japanese satori. Similar ideas appear across Asian traditions: kaivalya and moksha (liberation) in Hinduism, ushta in Zoroastrianism, and various forms in Sufism, Christian mysticism, and Taoist thought.
The English word “enlightenment” is relatively young in spiritual usage. It points toward a state of ultimate inner freedom, sometimes including release from the cycle of reincarnation. Ask ten spiritual practitioners what it means and you will get ten different answers. Some are poetic and dreamy, some intellectual and abstract, most of them filtered through whatever path the speaker happens to walk.
I want to give you something more useful: a definition you can measure your inner work against.
A Technical Definition
I am a scientist by training and a practitioner by calling. When I work with a soul, I do not romanticize what I see. I describe it. So here is the definition I use, drawn from direct observation rather than from books.
Spiritual enlightenment is reached when a soul’s vibration, its level of awareness, stabilizes at the seventh chakra.
A few points are worth knowing. The body’s vibration is not the same thing as the soul’s vibration; the two can sit at very different levels in the same person. “Vibration” and “level of awareness” point to the same thing and can be used interchangeably. The chakra scale runs from one to seven, with each step representing a real, measurable shift in how a soul perceives and acts within Creation.
When someone reaches the same soul vibration as Buddha, Jesus, Krishna, Lao Tzu, Ramakrishna, Vivekananda, or Yogananda, whether through past-life work, present effort, or both, they are enlightened. That is the technical bar. Nothing less, nothing more.
These great souls walked the Earth in human bodies that vibrated below the seventh-chakra mark. The body operates within the physical conditions of incarnation; the soul is what carries the awareness. Most people on Earth today carry both soul and body vibrations near the 3.5 level, which is why the Hindu and yogic traditions describe the kundalini coiled three and a half times in the root chakra. Our world, taken as a whole, sits at a 3D level (D for dimension of vibration). For a closer look at the path itself, I cover it in detail in my article on how to achieve enlightenment.
Why Practitioners Describe Enlightenment Differently
Each of us carries masculine and feminine aspects. These aspects have nothing to do with being a man or a woman. They are two distinct ways the soul perceives and acts on Creation, and the balance between them shapes how we understand every spiritual question, including this one.
The positive masculine aspect is the builder. It is organized, decisive, structural, and protective, but it does not have direct access to higher energy. Think of it as the architect with the blueprint but no bricks.
The positive feminine aspect is nurturing, intuitive, and free of duality, with full access to higher energy. It is the bricks and the mortar, the raw building material. What it lacks is the structure: the plan, the steady follow-through, the willingness to make a decision and stick with it.
Put the two together and you can build a house, a person, or even a universe! The ideal is a 50/50 balance, and that ideal is rare. Most souls lean significantly to one side, often 70/30 or further. Human civilization has been masculine-dominated for a very long time, frequently in the aspect’s negative form: domination, control, force, and a hunger for power that has shaped much of recorded history.
Bias Shapes the Answer
When you ask someone what enlightenment is, their bias speaks before they do.
Souls with a heavier feminine lean tend to give answers built on feeling. They will tell you we are already enlightened, that there is nothing to do, that everything is bliss, that the negative is illusion. Push them with a logical question. If we are already enlightened, why are we incarnated in this 3D world doing this difficult work? The answer rarely satisfies. Bring up the sacred texts that describe Buddha’s seven years in the forest, Jesus in the desert, or Krishna on the battlefield, and you will often hit a wall. The bliss model has no comfortable place for those struggles.
Souls with a heavier masculine lean go the opposite direction. They emphasize discipline, technique, sacrifice, hours of meditation, strict adherence to a method. The path is hard and the rewards are earned. These practitioners often make real progress, but I have observed a pattern: many of them struggle to connect with the heart, with their own higher soul, and with the disembodied higher entities who could actually help them. They build the structure beautifully and forget to fill it with energy.
Neither bias gives a complete picture. Enlightenment is what happens when both aspects are present in the same soul, working together.

The Two Aspects an Enlightened Soul Has Integrated
In my direct experience, a soul reaches the seventh chakra when both of these are well-developed:
The mature masculine aspect: a deep, working understanding of Creation. How it operates. The fundamental laws of energy. The soul’s journey across many lives and what it is trying to learn. The relationship between soul and body. The kundalini and its real movement. The structure of the path itself.
The mature feminine aspect: real, lived access to higher energy. A clear connection with the heart. Strong intuition. Energy sensitivity. The ability to communicate with higher and disembodied souls. The capacity to channel and transfer energy, to read another person’s energies, to help others energetically. Ancient texts describe these abilities as siddhis. Having siddhis does not make a soul enlightened on its own; only a very high consciousness combined with these abilities does.
Look at any of the great enlightened souls history remembers and you will see both aspects in them. Mastery of higher energy combined with a deep understanding of how the universe works, and principles that hold under pressure. Neither aspect alone is enough. The mature masculine without feminine access becomes a brilliant theory with no power behind it. The mature feminine without masculine structure becomes raw energy with no direction. The seventh chakra awareness holds them together.
The State of Enlightenment on Earth Today
From my spiritual research, there are currently around 3,000 to 4,000 fully enlightened souls incarnated on Earth, down from roughly 7,000 only a few years ago. The number has dropped because some have completed their work and left their bodies, or just dropped due to this 3D world's challenges, and replacements at that level are not arriving in equal numbers.
What is rising, and rising quickly, is the population of higher 4D souls. These are souls whose vibration sits above the 3D average but well below the seventh-chakra threshold. They are the ones who will carry humanity through the shift from 3D to 4D awareness, and they are arriving in larger numbers, awakening earlier, and finding each other through the work they do.
Before any collective shift can settle into the planet, the older and denser energies have to be released. We are watching that release happen now, through the upheavals and conflicts of our era. None of it is pleasant. None of it is meaningless either. It is the clearing that has to come before the new structure can hold.
Each soul gets to decide, consciously or unconsciously, which side of that shift it wants to be on.
A Closing Thought
Enlightenment is not a feeling, a personality type, or a reward for good behavior. It is a measurable state of soul awareness, the seventh chakra stabilized, built from the integration of clear understanding and clean energetic access. Most of us are not there yet, and that is fine. The work is the point, and the work is real.
If you want to walk this path with structure rather than guesswork, I would be glad to help. Body & Soul Ascension Academy was built for souls who want a grounded, technical, working approach to this kind of inner work, including energy readings, spiritual assessments, limiting beliefs healing, and a thirteen-level academy that takes you through the path step by step. You can explore how I work with clients there, or simply keep reading the articles here that speak to where you are right now.
The seventh chakra awareness is real. The path to it is real. Your soul already knows the way home; the work is just remembering.
